Guide · Advertising: Meta ads or Google ads: which should a local service business start with?

Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads create demand, Google ads capture it. How a local service business should choose, sequence them and measure what matters.

The short answer

Start with Google Ads if people already search for what you do and you want calls this week. Start with Meta ads if the work is visual, the job is higher value, or few people search for it by name, because Meta puts you in front of people before they are looking. Most service businesses end up running both, with Google capturing existing demand and Meta building it, and tracking every call back to the ad that earned it.

The one-line difference

Google Ads catches people who are already searching, such as 'electrician Perth emergency'. Meta ads reach people scrolling Facebook and Instagram who did not know they needed you yet. Search buys intent. Social creates it.

When Google Ads should come first

Pick Google first when these are true.

  • Customers search for the service by name, and a call today is worth real money (blocked drain, tow, locksmith, urgent repairs).
  • You have a website that loads fast on a phone and a clear call or quote button.
  • You can answer the phone, or have a system that does, because search clicks go cold in minutes.

When Meta ads should come first

Pick Meta first when these are true.

  • The work is visual or considered: boat hire, fabrication, landscaping, renovations, storage, hospitality.
  • Few people search for the service by name, so there is no search demand to capture yet.
  • You have real footage or photos of the work. Real video beats stock, and the creative is what Meta rewards.

What to measure either way

Clicks and cost per click are not the point. Measure calls, texts and booked jobs, and which ad each one came from. If a platform cannot show you that, you are paying for activity rather than results.

A fast website and tracking in place on day one matter more than the choice of platform. Both channels send people to the same site, so a weak page wastes spend on either.

FAQ

Quick answers.

Yes when the work is visual or high value and you have real photos or video of it. Facebook and Instagram ads reach local people before they search, and they work best with fresh creative, tracked enquiries and a fast landing page.

For urgent trades where people search for the service, Google Ads usually produces the fastest calls. For considered or visual work, Meta ads often win. Many tradies run Google for ready-to-buy searches and Meta to stay in front of everyone else in the area.

Enough for the platform to learn and for you to see real results, which depends on your job value and local competition. Work backwards from what one new job is worth and how many enquiries it takes to win one, rather than picking a number first.
